The Red-Roofed Hanging Bee House offers a number of different sized holes for a variety of bees.
Each species of bee prefers a different diameter nesting hole. For example, Mason bees will select holes with a diameter of 3 to 7mm.
Attach the insect hotel to a south facing wall, tree or fence at a height between 1.5m to 2m. Make sure the entrance holes on the front can be easily seen by the insects. Choose a sunny location with protection from wind and rain preferably within or near some vegetation. Native plants, herbs, blossoming flowers, shrubs and trees nearby will ensure a fully booked bee hotel.
A female bee creates cells in a deep narrow wooden hole with a supply of pollen and nectar to provide food for the larvae. Wild bees then seal their tubes with loam.
Europe is home to hundreds of bee species. Wild bee species help to fertilise plants and flowers in your garden, and will very rarely sting. With this bee house you offer the opportunity for several species of bees to nest and hibernate at the same time.
